Wesley Vigil is one of the few potters from Tesuque Pueblo. Each piece is made from native clay and coil-built. Wesley focuses on the revival of Tesuque pottery in his shapes and designs. He is a self-taught potter who has been making pottery for 15 years. Wesley learned to make pottery in 2000 by watching a film on Maria Martinez, including processing the clay and forming the pots. But it wasn’t until 2007 that he began making larger pieces for which he has become well-known. This large jar is coil-built and has a wide shoulder and a straight neck. The neck of the jar is painted with a plant design. There is an additional plant design near the base. The central band has plant and cloud designs. The precision of the painting is striking. The inside and the base of the jar reveal the micaceous clay. The piece is signed, “Wesley Vigil”.
