Reyes Madelena (b. 1938) learned to make pottery from her grandmother, Benina Medina Madalena (Zia). Benina married Ramon Madelena from Jemez Pueblo. Reyes began making pottery in the 1950s. This large jar is coil built and painted with a complex series of tightly painted designs. They encompass nearly the entire surface of the jar! There is a woven leather strap around the neck and extending beyond the jar. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Reyes Madelina”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repairs.
