Santa Clara potter Frances Salazar was known for her highly polished traditional pottery. This jar is from the 1970s. It is coil-built, carved, stone polished and traditionally fired black. The jar has a carved avanyu as the design. Note how she used the negative space to accentuate the imagery. The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Frances Salazar”.

Frances Salazar was a daughter of noted potter Flora Naranjo and a sister of Glenda Naranjo and Barbara Martinez. She was the mother of potters Elaine Salazar, Sophie Cata, and Yolanda Verde. She learned to make pottery from her mother and over the years won numerous awards for her pottery at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market.
