Historic
This is a striking large plate by Tony Da. Tony primarily made his plates before 1971 and just a few after. This plate is fully polished and the five lines around the rim are painted onto the piece before it was fired. There is a large avanyu etched into the clay with four inset pieces of turquoise. Each piece of turquoise is inset into the clay. Tony made more smaller plates (the 6″ size) than the larger 11″ ones. As well, this Avanyu imagery is much less common as it was usually done on his later plates rather than the early ones. The complexity of this piece, the stones, and the size make is a scarce but spectacular piece of his art in clay. The plate was traditionally fired and it is a deep red coloration. It is signed on the back in the clay “DA”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Tony’s plates and among his most iconic styles of pottery and a form that he did not continue to make after about 1973.
