This is a thin-walled tall jar by Jared Tso. He is one of the rising stars of Native pottery. He is a grandson of potter Faye Tso and his pottery is exceptionally refined in technique and traditional in style. Each piece is coil-built from traditional native Navajo clay and traditionally fired. This jar is an unusual shape with a sharp lower and upper shoulder. The neck of the jar has two “necklaces” that are raised around the neck of the jar and incised to appaear like rope. The jar is entiteld, “Midnight Moonlight”. The jar was polished in a swirl and traditonally fired to make is a silvery black. There is a lot of subltle texture to the surface as if there is a full moon behind the clouds lighting up the night sky. The shape and coloration are striking! After the firing, the jar is then covered in pinon pitch. It is exciting to see an artist find inspiration in the historic work and, using the same clays, refine them in a modernistic manner. The jar is signed, “Jared Tso”.
