Herrera, Rosita de – Incised Potsuwi’i Jar with Painted Designs (1970s)

6.25"w x 5.5"h

$ 400.00

Rosita de Herrera is a daughter of noted Ohkay Owingeh potter Tomasita Montoya and a sister of Dominguita Sisneros.  This jar is coil-built. The top rim and the base are fully polished a deep red. The center is incised with three bands of designs.  They are each interlocking to create larger designs. Some of the sections are fully incised with lines, and others are painted with lines.  It is the first time I’ve seen her do this style, which is quite striking in person.  Rosita added a micaceous clay slip to the incised designs which give it a bit of a sparkle. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rosita de Herrera”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
