Laura Gachupin is one of the leading potters from Jemez Pueblo. This is one of her classic melon jars. The jar has 32 straight melon ribs carved into the clay. They extend from the bottom of the neck to the base. The entire piece is fully polished tan, the natural color of the clay. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Laura Gachupin”.

Laura Gachupin is one of the leading traditional potters from Jemez pueblo. She learned to make pottery from her grandmother, Persingula Gachupin and she is a daughter of Marie Romero and a sister of Maxine Toya and the aunt of Dominique Toya. She is also the mother of potters Benina Foley and Gordon Foley. Laura has won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Indian Market and Gallup Ceremonials.
