Archuleta, Mary Ester – Black Kiva Step Edge Open Bowl (1970s)

This is an unsual piece by Mary Ester Archuleta.  Mary is the second youngest daughter of Margaret Tafoya.  She married into San Juan Pueblo in the late 1960s and created most of her pieces in the San Juan-inspired style.  This piece has a terrace or kiva step edge.  The entire piece is fully polished to a high shine.  It was traditionally fired a glassy black.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Mary E. Archuleta.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
