Tse-Pe, Dora – Red and Buff Jar with Carved Avanyu and Turquoise (1988)
$ 1,200.00
This is a classic jar by Dora Tse-Pe. She learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law, Rose Gonzales, and continued her work in a similar style of carving. The entire jar is fully polished. The sharp shoulder and long neck shape were inspired by the pottery of Rose. Along the shoulder, the avanyu is carved into the clay in a cameo style. There is a single piece of turquoise inset for the eye of the avanyu. The neck is is matte, the natural color of the clay. The piece was fired a rich red coloration. Of course, it is perfectly polished, which is what Rose was known for in her pottery! The piece was made in 1988. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dora of San Ildefonso”.
