This is a very creative figurative by Randy Nahohai. He was known for his innovative Zuni pottery. Do you ever had a piece of pottery that you have seen in a magazine or book, but never in person? That’s me with Randy’s Corn Maiden Figures. I remember seeing them in various books in the 1990s, but this is the first time I’ve actually held one. No wonder everyone was so crazy about them decades ago. They are exceptional clay workers with each kernel of corn creating the body of the piece. I think it’s the shawl that l appreciate the most, as there is movement and folds in the “cloth” that are exceptional. The hair is incised, and the piece is painted with various clay slips. The Corn Maiden sits on an upside-down Zuni kiva bowl with dragonflies on the outside. The figure is signed on the bottom, “R. Nahohai”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
The Story of the Zuni Corn Maiden:
Zuni culture, the Corn Maidens are revered figures who symbolize feminine energy of sustenance, fertility, and abundance. They are believed to have brought the gift of corn to the people and are associated with the nurturing and life-giving qualities essential for survival. Some stories depict the Corn Maidens as figures who transform themselves to provide corn, showcasing their role in creation and providing for the community.
