Dominique Toya was known for her intricately carved pottery with sharp ridged melon swirls. This is an earlier piece of her pottery. It has a tall, cylindrical shape. There are 25 ribs carved into the clay. Each spirals down from the rim to the base. Each is fully polished the natural color of the clay. The jar was traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Damian Toya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Dominique Toya
Dominique Toya learned to make pottery from her mother, Maxine Toya. She was a niece of Laura Gachupin and a granddaughter of Marie G. Romero. Dominique created her distinctive style of pottery using native clay and micaceous clay slips for the surface. Dominique's awards include a "Best of Pottery" from the Heard Indian Market. Her work can also be found in museums throughout the country, including the Eiteljorg, the Heard Museum, the Peabody Essex, and the Denver Art Museum. Her awards include Best of Classification at the Heard Indian Market - 2008, Best of Classification at the Santa Fe Indian Market - 2009, Best of Classification at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial - 2009, Best of Show at the Eiteljorg Indian Market in Indianapolis - 2010, and Best of Division at the Santa Fe Indian market - 2013.
