Nampeyo, Tonita – Bowl with Eagle Tail Designs (1990s)

6"w x 5"h

$ 700.00

This is an unusual bowl by Tonita Nampeyo.  She was a daughter of Fannie Nampeyo and a granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano.  She was known for her traditional pottery using natural clay slips and bee-weed for the black.  This bowl is coil-built, thin-walled, and painted with bee-weed (black) and a red clay slip.  The bowl is round in shape, but what makes it unusual is the design.  It is a modernized eagle tail pattern.  Note how the wings are angular, the back of the tail has an off-center rectangle. It give the piece a very modern appearance to a very historic design.  The bowl was traditionally fired for the striking coloration of the blushes.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Tonita Nampeyo”. The corn plant signifies that she is part of the Corn Clan.
