Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowl. This bowl is his  classic style of “faceted” melon jar.  Each rib extends from the rim to the base and they are flattened to create a “faceted” appearance.  The ribs are evenly spaced and flow at an angle creating a “swirling” appearance.  The bowl is highly polished and fired a glassy black.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.

This jar is from 1993.  It is his classic style of “faceted” melon jar.  Each rib extends from the rim to the base and they are flattened to create a “faceted” appearance.  The ribs are evenly spaced and perfectly straight.  The straight ribs perfectly accentuate the “faceted” style!  The jar is highly polished and fired a glassy black.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.

Denny Gutierrez

Denny learned to make pottery from his mother, Katherine Gutierrez. His sister JoAnn Million and aunt Clara Stone are also well-known potters. Denny Gutierrez created his distinctive "faceted melon bowl" style in the 1990s. From 2000 to 2004, he was governor of Santa Clara Pueblo. His pottery won numerous awards at Santa Fe Indian Market over the years and added a new dimension to the pottery's ribbed or melon bowl style.
