This is a creative bowl by Ida Sahmie.  The piece has a round body and was coil-built and stone polished. The bowl has two of her famous designs on the top.  There is a Rainbow Yei on half the bowl next to a corn plant on either side.  The figure is both etched into the clay and painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay.  The story of the Rainbow Yei is:

“The Rainbow Yei is a symbol of protection and the pathway of the Yeis. The “Yei” is a healing spirit that intercedes between the Creator and humans and controls the sun, moon, wind, and rain. A rainbow yei is most often seen encircling traditional sandpaintings to protect the image from evil spirits.”

Next to the Rainbow Yei are eight Navajo dancers that are part of the Day Chant.  The figures are tightly etched into the surface of the clay and then painted.  Note that each of the male figures has a different design etched onto their skirt!   All the design was done before the piece was traditionally fired.  Ida said of this design:

“It takes me so much time to etch the designs. I etch each figure before the jar is fired.  After they are etched then I use the slips to create the colors. After all the painting is done, then I fire it outside.”

The bowl is signed on the bottom, “Ida Sahmie”.  It is from 1993 and it is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Ida is the only Navajo potter creating this unique style of ethnographic pottery that captures the stories and world of Dine symbolism.
