Mavasta Honyouti is a skilled Hopi Katsina carver from Hotevilla Third Mesa; He is Ronald Honyouti’s son and Clyde Honyouti’s Grandson, both skilled Hopi Katsina carvers. He is well known for his scenes carved in low-relief. This piece is carved in relief with a large sunflower in the center. It is surrounded by dragonflies and there are carved clouds at the top. It is a study for a large scale installation Mavasta has at the Hopi Health Care Center in Polacca, AZ. Mavasta says the designs remind him of family. It is signed on the back, “M. Honyouti”.

The Flower Katsina represents the beauty and pleasantness of flowers and forecasting spring’s bloom. The Tsitoto or Flower Katsina, is associated with rain, purification, and may often be seen holding yucca blades to touch individuals as a form of blessing.
It is a striking piece and the dimension of the carving adds shadows and depth. The piece is painted after the carving. It is signed, “M. Honyouti”.
