Tafoya, LuAnn – Red Carved Canteen
The is a classic canteen from LuAnn Tafoya. She is a daughter of Margaret Tafoya and learned to make large vessels from her mother. The canteen is similar in shape to the canteens made by her mother. It is carved on both sides. One side has a circular sun design with cloud and rain patterns. The opposite side has complex carved clouds and mesa patterns. The entire piece is fully polished red. Note that she has made a “double shoulder” near the neck of the canteen, which reflects the light. There is a leather strap on the handles and a hand-carved “stopper” for the canteen. The jar is highly polished and traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “LuAnn Tafoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
