Tanner , Roy & Stella – Bowl with Man, Dog, and Pueblo Scene (1983)

2.25'w x 2.25"h

$ 275.00

Stella Tanner (Kwa Povi) and her son Roy (Tsigowanu) began making pottery together in 1976.  Stella was a granddaughter of Luteria Atencio, a daughter of Crucita Talalchy, and a sister of Mary Gutierrez and Joe Talachy.  It was Luteria who taught them both to make pottery.   Stella made and polished the pottery, and Roy etched the designs into the surface. This is a charming piece.  The bowl is fully polished, and there is a man sitting next to his dog, looking out at the kiva and the pueblo.  Along the rim are etched feathers that become larger as the bowl is turned.  The man and the dog are highlighted with white clay.  The piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Kwa Povi & Tsigowanu”.  They stopped working around 1986, but during their brief career as potters, they won awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Eight Northern Indian Market.
