Tafoya, Legoria – Oval Bowl with Sun Design (1950s)

7.5" long x 4.75"w x 2.75"h

$ 250.00

Legoria Tafoya was a sister of the noted painter Pablita Velarde. She was the mother of noted potter Celes Tafoya. This oval bowl is coil-built, polished, painted, and traditionally fired.  The piece is, of course, a cigarette holder/ashtray.  During the 1950s-60s era, many potters made souvenir-type pieces like ashtrays, lighter holders, and salt and pepper shakers.  This piece is in nearly perfect condition, which is amazing and a testament to it not having been used. The shape is also exceptional as the raised area is fully polished, as is the remainder of the bowl. I have to admit, what I didn’t catch at first was the design.  When you look into the oval bowl from the raised area, there is a painted figure and sun design that is not really noticeable from the other direction!  Obviously, you would be using the piece from that vantage point.  Very clever.  The piece was traditionally fired black. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Legoria.” It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
