Carpio, Caroline – Jar with Raised Lizard and Sand Designs

Caroline Lucero-Carpio is from Isleta Pueblo. She studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts and has been working in clay for over 40 years. She is also known for her bronzes. Her pottery is coil-built, stone-polished, and fired. In 2000, she received a SWAIA fellowship and was Artist of the Year for the Indian Arts and Crafts Association (IACA). This jar has a sharp shoulder and a sloping side. The piece is fully polished tan, the natural color of the clay. There is a lizard in relief on the jar, with a tail that swirls around the side. There are additional etched sand designs. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Caroline Carpio”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
