Sahme, Jean – 13″ Tall Jar with 33 Mimbres Animals and Insects (1990s)

This is a very complex, tall jar by Jean Sahme. She was the daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This jar has straight sides, a high shoulder, and a short neck. The entire piece is fully polished. The jar is painted with bee-weed and clay slips for the coloration. There are 33 Mimbres animals and insects on the jar. There is a turtle, dragonfly, butterfly, quail, bee, snake, rabbit, antelope, and more! Each one is different from the next, and they encompass the entire surface of the jar! The piece was traditionally fired to create slight blushes on the surface. The piece is thin-walled and elegant in form and design. It is signed with Sak’honsee”, along with her fish hallmark and an ear of corn (Corn Clan). It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. The piece is accompanied by a photo of her holding the piece.
