Tso, Jared – 20″ Tall “Four Yeis” Jar

11.5"w x 20"h

$ 7,000.00

This is a large, new jar by Jared Tso. Jared has created a series of pieces inspired by the work of his grandmother, Faye Tso. Faye was the first in Navajo pottery to begin adding traditional Navajo designs, animals, and other imagery to her pottery. This jar is massive!  It is coil-built from native clay, stone-polished, incised with designs, and traditionally fired.  The jar has four female Yei Figures. “Yei” (pronounced “yay”) is the Navajo name for the benevolent supernatural beings who bring their healing power to medicinal ceremonies still performed today. Each figure is in relief on the jar with small impressed “dots” on the raised areas, much like Faye’s pottery.  Note as well the angular, swirling polish to the surface of the piece!  The jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. The jar was then covered in pinon-pitch, in much the same manner as historic Navajo pottery.  This piece is signed, “Jared Tso” on the bottom.  The last photo is the jar by Faye Tso form which he took inspiration.
