This is a stunning cylindrical jar by Russell Sanchez. He continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is perfectly coil-built, stone-polished, and etched. The shape has a flaring base and flaring rim. The rim and base are polished red. The body of the jar has ten rows of etched checkerboard designs. Each is either micaceous or matte. In each row, there are eight inset pieces of coral and each row is separated by a row of shell hei-shi beads. The jar has a red polished lid with a bear on a base with a red polished rim. There are 42 inset coral on the edge of the lid. There are turquioise for the eyes of the bear and on the back of the bear. The stones are all inset after the firing. It is signed on the bottom, “Russell”.
