This is a creative jar by Daniel Begay.  The piece is coil-built, carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The jar is entitled, “Follow your Path”.  It is an elegant shape with a high, round shoudler.  The neck is slipped with mica.  Around the shoulder are four turtles, each with a different design on their shell.  As well, below each turtle is a different design, from rounded or angular waves to clouds and mist.  The jar has a lot of carving and various designs!  The areas are both polished and matte and create a striking visual flow across the surface of the piece.  It was traditionally fired a glassy black coloration.  The style of carving has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Daniel Begay”.

Daniel Begay

Daniel T. Begay learned to make pottery from his father, Harrison Begay Jr., and his mother, Marie John. Daniel grew up in Santa Clara Pueblo and is Diné, which inspired him to combine the two cultures and traditions in his pottery. Each piece is coil-built, deeply carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. Daniel has a Master’s in Business Administration. He is married to Melodie and has three daughters, Violet, Ayani, and Kwynn. He signs his work “Daniel B.” and adds the year the pot was made.
