Yazzie, Angie – 14″ Wide Micaceous Wide Shoulder Jar (2017)

This is a striking large jar by Angie Yazzie.  She is renowned for her thin-walled Taos pottery. Each piece is coil-built and made from micaceous clay near Taos Pueblo.  Angie focuses on traditional shapes and makes each piece nearly paper-thin!  It almost feels like there is nothing there when you hold one! This jar is thin-walled and a shape she calls her “Grandmother Jar”.  It is a graceful shape with a wide shoulder that just slightly dips down before extending up to the rim.  The rim of the jar is fluted.  The jar is made from micaceous clay so when it is fired it has a sparkling/metallic appearance.  Angie fires her pieces using wood, so it is a firing process different from Santa Clara blackware.  The result is that you can very slightly see the fire-clouds on the bottom of the piece..  It looks like it is still in the fire!  That is a great addition, as it speaks to the traditional firing methods!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Angie Yazzie”.  She has won numerous awards for her work, including “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2017.

Angie Yazzie is the daughter of Mary Archuleta (Taos) and Nick Yazzie (Dine). Angie was raised at Taos Pueblo. She began making pottery when she was nine years old and learned from both her mother and her grandmother, Isabel Archuleta. She makes pottery from the Taos micaceous clay. Each piece is coil built and wood-fired. Angie has won numerous awards for her pottery, including “Best of Pottery” at Santa Fe Indian Market.
