Gutierrez, Lois – 11″ Tall Polychrome Double Kiva Rim Jar with Four Rain Dancers (2000)
$ 2,200.00
This is a traditional complex polychrome kiva step jar by Lois Gutierrez. She is one of the few potters who continues to create polychrome pottery at Santa Clara. Polychrome, or more than three different colors of clay slips, are all painted onto the surface of the vessel before it is fired. This jar has a round body, an elongated neck, and the neck is carved with a kiva step on two sides. The jar has four Rain Dancers encircling the piece.
“The Rain Dance at Santa Clara Pueblo is called “Ja-Day-Wah”. It is performed by the Winter Clan in the summertime. Women wear a large tablita and carry a basket in one hand and a symbolic squash flower in the other hand. The men carry a staff and a large rattle”
Each figure is highly detailed. Note the rainbow figures on the tablitas and the Sunface on the baskets. There is amazing detail painted on the women’s dresses. The jar is creative and striking in person. There EIGHT different colors of clay on this jar. Did you know that Lois collects each of the different clays from around Santa Clara Pueblo in order to create these colorations? The jar was traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom, “Lois 2000”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
