Tafoya-Sanchez, Linda – 9″ Tall Plum-and-Black Storage Jar with Rainbows and Clouds

This is a classic storage jar by Linda Tafoya-Sanchez. This jar has a round body, high shoulder, and a short neck. The shape of the jar creates a lot of volume and design space. Around the top of the shoulder are six rainbows. Three of them are traditional in shape and have linear rain designs extending downward. The other three have carved wind designs inside the rainbow. Below them is a long panel with carved cloud, rain, and mountain designs. Each of the panels is different in design! On this piece, Linda used a black clay to fill in the area that was carved away in the designs. The piece was fired her new “plum/dark cherry” coloration. The black lines in the background add to the overall impact and depth. Linda said that it took a lot of time to delicately paint the black clay into all the carved areas, but the result was worth the effort! It is exceptional in person! The color seems to change in the light. It is exciting that not only has she created this coloration, but she has also been able to achieve it consistently. She says it is a bit more work in the firing but the results are worth the time and risk. The jar has a very modernist appearance and yet is classic in traditional design elements. It is signed on the bottom, “Linda Tafoya-Sanchez”.
