Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  This tall cylindrical jar is an amazing shape.  It’s a testament to Russell’s skill as a potter that he can make a piece this tall with perfectly even walls so that it keeps its cylindrical form.  The neck and base are fully polished. The central band is slipped red.  There is an avanyu near the base. The neck has bear apws and clouds.  The central band has large Pueblo-style birds.  Each bird is delicately etched into the clay.  Each bird is also inset with a piece of Kingman Turquoise. There are six bands of shell and turquoise hei-shi beads.  The jar has a red polished bear lid.  The bear is etched with a heartline, and there is a single piece of Kingman Turquoise on the top of the bear.  The lid fits the piece perfeclty.   All the stones are inset after firing.  The bowl is elegant in shape and design with a modern strength.  It is signed, “Russell”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
