WOW! This is a very complex version of Russell Sanchez’s checkerboard design. He continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is perfectly coil-built, stone-polished, and etched. The jar has a round body and an elongated neck. The neck and base are fully polished red. There are thirteen rows of checkerboards. Each row is either micaceous or matte. The matte squares are inset with coral after the firing. Each row is separated by a row of shell and turquoise hei-shi beads. The lid has a sculpted bear that is polished red. The base of the lid is slipped with mica. The bear has a large turquoise stone on its back. The jar was firing an amazing deep, deep red coloration. After the firing, all 252 stones were inset into the piece! There is a beautiful balance of the jar with the shape of the bear! It is signed on the bottom, “Russell”. It has a blue ribbon from the 2026 Gallup Ceremonials.
