Namoki, Lawrence – “Awatovi” Jar with Petroglyph Designs (1990s)

3.5"w x 3.5"h

$ 475.00

Lawrence Namoki was known for the variety of styles of his pottery. While he began with deeply carved pottery, he ended his career by creating delicately painted vessels.  This jar is coil-built and painted with clay slips.  The neck of the jar is carved and painted to look like wood.  There is a more deeply carved and incised red band.  Around the center of the piece there are various petroglyph figures.  There is a figure, lizard, avanyu, and antelope.  They are each tightly painted on a stippled background meant to look like rock. The bottom again is painted to look like wood. This jar combines two periods of his pottery with the carved and painted designs. They are painted with clay slips and bee-weed on a painted clay surface.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Lawrence Namoki”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
