This is a large jar by Franklin Peters. He is known for his thin-walled pottery and use of traditional Acoma imagery on his pottery. The jar is coil-built with native clay and painted with bee-weed (black) and clay slip. The jar has two large heartline deer under a rainbow design. As the jar is turned, there is a red rainbow design along with rain, cloud, and plant designs. It is a very complicated design for the jar. The rim of the jar has a painted “spirit line”, which is often seen on Acoma pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Frankie J. Huwaka”.

There is a lot of complex design imagery for the size. The rim of the jar has a painted “spirit line”, which is often seen on Acoma pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Franklin Peters”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Franklin Peters learned to make pottery from his mother Ella Vallo Peters and her sister Phyllis Juanico. His work remains influenced by these traditional potters. He also received one of the prestigious fellowships at the School of American Research in 2011. There he was able to study and examine historic Acoma pottery and the experience has helped to influence the direction of his artwork. Franklin uses native clay and traditional paints for his pottery.
