Cordero, Buffy – Clay Turtle Storyteller with One Child (1980s)

Buffy Cordero Suina (b. 1969) is a granddaughter of Helen Cordero and a daughter of George Cordero.  She learned to make pottery from her grandmother and father.  Her pieces were distinctive and creative in style and form.  She stopped making pottery after Helen Cordero passed away in 1994.  This figure is one of her classic turtle storytellers.  The child is sitting on a red “blanket” on the back of the turtle.  Note the checkerboard design on the shirt of the child. The piece is painted with clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom, “Buffy Cordero Suina”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
