Lucas, Steve -“Longhair Katsinas” Five Color Jar (2026)

6"w x 4.25"h

$ 1,600.00

This is a new design by Steve Lucas.  He is one of the leading Hopi-Tewa potters working today.  Each piece is coil built, stone polished, painted with native clay slips and bee-weed (black) and traditionally fired. This is the first time he has made a piece with this design, using only the Longhair Katsinas. The Longhair Katsina, also known as Angak’china. The Longhair Katsina is one of the most popular Katsinam and is often depicted with long hair and a beard representing rain.  Separating each of the four Katsina are rain clouds.  The jar has polished white, red, green, and brown colorations.  Tth bottom of the jar is fully polished.  The jar was traditionally fired which created the blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan).
