7"w x 5.5"h

$ 800.00

Elva Tewaguna Namepyo, was a daughter of Fannie Nampeyo, a granddaughter of the Nampeyo of Hano and a sister of Iris and Tonita Nampeyo and Thomas Polacca.  Her pottery was coil built, stone polished and painted with bee-weed and natural clay slips. This is a classic Hopi-Tewa jar with a high, round shoulder and short neck with a slightly turned-out rim.  The entire piece is fully polished, including the inside of the neck!  The jar is painted with a traditional blackbird migration design. Note the blackbird wings above the shoulder and additional bird wings and bird tails below the shoulder.  There are a total of 18 bird wings painted on the jar (above and below the shoulder).  It is signed on the bottom before fired, “Elva Nampeyo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Her daughter Adelle Nampeyo continues in the same family tradition.
