Martinez, Barbara – 13″ Tall Wedding Vase with Carved Feathers and Avanyu

Barbara “Jo-Povi” Martinez (b. 1947) is a daughter of noted potter Flora Naranjo.  She is the mother of Chris Martinez, Vickie Martinez, and Sammy Naranjo.  She began making pottery in 1965 and learned from her mother.  Each piece is coil built, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired.  This is a large wedding vase. There are 22 carved feathers around the top of the shoulder. Below is a carved avanyu with carved rain and cloud designs.  It is polished and fired a deep, glossy black.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Barbara Martinez”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
