Carpio, Caroline – Red Jar with Carved Mountains and Inset Turquoise Beads

Caroline Lucero-Carpio is from Isleta Pueblo. She studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts and has been working in clay for over 40 years. She is also known for her bronzes. Her pottery is coil-built, stone-polished, and fired. In 2000 she received a SWAIA fellowship and was Artist of the Year for the Indian Arts and Craft Association, (IACA). This jar is made from red clay and fully polished. Around the top of the shoulder it is carved with a single band of mountain designs and they are matte. There is an inset row of turquoise. There are additional mountains cared at the rim. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Caroline Carpio”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
