Roybal, Tonita – Red-on-Red Jar with Feather Design (1920s)
$ 700.00
Tonita Roybal remains one of the great innovative names in San Ildefonso pottery. This is a fascinating red-on-red jar from the late 1920s. The design is a feather pattern and not the little horizontal lines at the end of the feathers by the rim. This can often be seen on her earlier unsigned work, as well as thoughout her later pottery career. The jar is highly polished and fired a deep red coloration. There are also many fewer of her red pieces than the blackware. The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed, “Tonita” in the clay on the bottom. Not as well that she also signed, “San Ildefonso” on the bottom, which is very unusual. As they were signed with a polishing stone before firing, it’s certainly intentional. Much like Maria, she traveled a lot, and it might have been a piece she made for one of the World Fairs or other event outside of the Southwest.
