This is an oval seedpot by Ray Tafoya.  It is fully polished and oval in shape.  It has a Mimbres cougar on one half of the piece.  The eye of the cougar is the hole for the seedpot.  It is surrounded by feathers and geometric designs.   It is highlighted with additional yellow, red, white, green, and blue clay slips.  The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom with his hallmark that means “White Mountain” in Tewa.

This miniature seedpot by Ray Tafoya.  It is fully polished and conical in shape.  It has a Mimbres-style fish etched into the clay.  It is surrounded by waves and geometric designs.   It is highlighted with additional yellow and blue clay slips.  The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom with his hallmark that means “White Mountain” in Tewa.

Tafoya, Ray (1956-1994)

Ray Tafoya was an innovator in incised pottery with his use of Mimbres designs and larger plain surfaces with highlighted designs. He was a brother of Paul Speckled Rock and Kenneth Tafoya. He was a grandson of Severa Tafoya, the husband of Emily Tafoya and the father of Jennifer Tafoya. He was known for his incised miniature pottery with designs highlighted by additional clay slips.
