This is an amazing carved bowl by Sergio Lugo. He is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood. He learned to make pottery from his mother. Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This piece is entitled, “Terrace”. It is deeply carved with a series of terrace or cloud designs. There are carved steps down from the rim and steps up from the base. After it is carved, it is slipped with micaceous and various colors of clay. There are two different blue clays and a dark brown. The piece was traditionally fired outdoors to create a rich coloration. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”. There are ribbons from the 2026 Gallup Ceremonials.

Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood. He learned to make pottery from his mother. Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This piece combines nearly every technique, including carving, etching, painting, and polishing. The jar has a square shape with carved clouds at the rim and carved leaves at the base. They are stone polished to a high shine. The center of the jar is painted with clay slips to create the aspen trees. However, look closer, and the knots of the aspen trees are actually eyes! The piece was traditionally fired with a rich coloration. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
