Garcia, Tammy – “Dreaming of Zuni” Multi-Color Jar

5.5"w x 6"h

$ 10,500.00

WOW!  This is an amazing and complex new jar by Tammy Garcia.  The jar is part of her “Pueblo Women” series.  The jar is made from native clay, coil-built, carved, polished, and fired.  Tammy said she wanted to make a series of pieces that focused on Pueblo women, past and present.  This jar is entitled “Dreaming of Zuni”.  The jar has a round shoulder and short neck.  There is a woman wearing a manta holding a Zuni jar with a heartline deer.  The heartline deer is a classic image in Zuni pottery, with the heart representing the strength and spirit of the animal.  As the jar is turned, there is a tan polished Zuni bird, a raincloud, and flowers.  The opposite side is stunning with two heartline deer above and below a large multi-layer tan polished rosette. The rosettes are flowers seen on traditional Zuni pottery.  Then there are additional flowers and another Zuni rainbird.  The jar is amazing with details and depth of carving.  The multiple colorations in the polished clays adds to the overall impact of the piece.  The jar is carved in a least five levels!  It is an exceptional piece by this amazing artist.  Few potters can tell a story in clay, let alone with such detail and precision! The jar is signed, “Tammy Garcia”.

Tammy says of her designs:

“What has intrigued me about pottery is the stories present in the designs.  You will often see animals or plants depcited. These were important to the makers.  When it comes time for me design a piece, I reflect on what is important to me.  I found that pottery in any style is a source for inspiration.  I take inspiration from the Pueblo potters of the past and the serenity of their art that lasts over centuries.”

Tammy has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been the recipient of the New Mexico Governor’s award.  It’s not surprising that with the intricate nature of her pottery, she makes only about ten pieces of pottery a year.  Yet each piece is unique and expands on her distinctive style and voice in the clay.
