Karen Abeita is known for her traditional and innovative Hopi-Tewa pottery. This wide bowl is coil-built and painted with bee-weed and clay slips. This is one of Karen’s most famous designs, her “shard pot”. It is painted with numerous interlocking pottery shard designs. Each shard is different yet they create a cohesive whole in design. The bowl was traditionally fired with slight color variations. It is signed on the bottom in bee-weed, “Karen Abeita”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Karen Abeita is known for her traditional and innovative Hopi-Tewa pottery. This wide bowl is coil-built and painted with bee-weed and clay slips. There are three old-style katsinas on the top, including a Qooqole, Grandmother, and Flower katsina. They are separated by three large bands of pottery shard designs. The shards reflect a variety of Hopi-Tewa designs. The bowl was traditionally fired with slight color variations. It is signed on the bottom in bee-weed, “Karen Abeita”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Karen Abeita’s mother was Lenora Nahoodyce Abeyta and her father, Isidor Abeita, Sr., was from Isleta Pueblo. Her maternal family is from the Kachina-Parrot Clan at Hopi. She is known for her intricately painted pottery and use of traditional designs and techniques. She has won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Indian Market and other events.
