Sanchez, Russell – Gunmetal Fired Jar with Avanyu and Coral

6"w x 6"h

$ 6,500.00

This gunmetal fired jar by Russell Sanchez.  He continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  This piece was fired to a gunmetal coloration.  What does gunmetal firing mean? Its when a piece of pottery is fired very high and instead of just turning black, it turns a silvery, metallic coloration.  Russell is one of the only potters working today who can achieve this coloration through firing as it is risky that the intense heat will crack the pottery.  The jar has a sharp shoulder and sloping neck.  The jar is etched with an avanyu before the firing.  There is a checkerboard design around the shoulder of the jar.  It was fired to a nearly perfect silvery gunmetal coloration.  I’m not sure the photos even do it justice, The jar has an inset coral for the eye of the avanyu.  It is signed, “Russell ’26”.  The jar has a blue ribbon from the 2026 Gallup Ceremonials
