This is an complex square jar by Rochelle Jewel Medlock (b. 2005). She is the daughter of noted potter Autumn Borts-Medlock. The piece is coil-built from native clay, carved, polished, and traditionally fired. The piece is entitled, “Bring the Rain. The jar is square in shape with each of the four side with a different design. There are two sides with large rain clouds. Two other side have plant, flower, and water designs. The jar is a complex and intricate connection of traditional and innovative designs. The are polished red or painted with blue clay. Creating pieces with flat sides is always more difficult in drying and firing. Rochelle said that she was inspired to make this shape after seeing photos of square pieces by her grandmother, Linda Cain. It is exceptional in person. It is signed, “Rochelle Jewel”. It is exciting to see her continue a legacy of clay!
