Carlos Dunlap was a son of Carmelita Dunlap and a grandson of Juanita Montoya Vigil, the youngest sister of Maria Martinez. He was a brother to Jeannie Dunlap, Cynthia Dunlap, Linda Dunlap, and Martha Appleaf Fender. This is an unsual black-on-red open bowl. The style is inspired by historic Black-on-Red San Ildefonso pottery from the late 1890s. The inside of the bowl has plant designs. The outside has prayer feathers and rain designs. It is signed, “Carlos Sunrise Dunlap” in the clay on the bottom. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. A striking and classic piece of his pottery.

It is fully polished white/creame then painted with black and red clays. The bowl is based a traditional form with the terraced raised side (representing a mountain). The outside has painted mountains and clouds. The inside has painted clouds and geometric designs. It is a striking and complicated piece with an elegant complement of colorations! It is signed, “Carlos Sunrise Dunlap” in the clay on the bottom. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. A striking and classic piece of his pottery.

Carlos Dunlap was a son of Carmelita Dunlap. He was a brother to Jeannie Dunlap, Cynthia Dunlap, Linda Dunlap, and Martha Appleaf Fender. Carmelita was a daughter of Juanita Vigil, the youngest sister of Maria Martinez. Carlos learned to make pottery from his mother. He created very large vessels in colorations that ranged from black to polychrome and a distinctive brown. However, it was his painting which remains so spectacular as it was very open and varied in style.
