6"w x 7"h

$ 575.00

Marie Sanchez Juanico (1937-2024) learned to make pottery from her mother, Dolores Sanchez (who lived to be 103!).  Marie began making pottery in 1962.  She was known for her innovative use of various colors of clay slips on her pottery.  Her daughter, Delores Juanico Aragon, continues to make pieces in a similar style. This is a large canteen that is coil-built and made with native clay.  The canteen has a round shape and the front is painted a classic Acoma double bird design. The back is polished red with a cloud design.  The canteen was traditionally fired, and a hand-carved stopper is on the top.  The canteen is signed on the back “M. S.  Juanico”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
