Quotskuyva, Dextra – “Birds and Feathers” Jar (1980s)
$ 4,400.00
This is a creative water jar by Dextra Quostkuyva Nampeyo. She is known for her innovative designs and forms that have dramatically influenced the world of Hopi-Tewa pottery. The shape has a sharp shoulder and turned out rim. The bottom half is polished, while the top half is matte. There are two birds painted on the jar with bee-weed and clay slips. Separating them are wing designs that are accented with white clay. The white, red, and brown clay areas are all stone-polished for a shine in contrast to the matte surface of the jar. Each bird is surrounded by dragonflies. It was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. It is from the 1980s. It is signed, “Dextra” on the bottom with a corn plant for Corn Clan. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
