Quotskuyva, Dextra – “Shards” Jar (1980s)
$ 8,800.00
WOW! This is a spectacular jar by Dextra Quotskuyva. The deign on this piece is her famous “shard” designs. It is one of a series of pieces she made with this design work in the early 1980s. They were obviously very time-consuming. There were two larger pieces with the shards on the top of the piece. This is a jar shape with the designs painted around the top of the shoulder. Dextra said of this design:
“When I did with that shard design, I was considering all the people in unity. The little shards represent everybody, the whole world, the universe. I tell myself stories as I work on the pieces. It will say, “Don’t leave me out. Put me in””. Dextra, Spoken Through Clay
The jar has tightly painted designs across the entire surface of the piece. They are painted with bee-weed and accented with white and red clay. When you check out the detail, the piece is extraordinary. The jar is thin-walled and the piece was traditionally fired. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dextra” and an ear of corn, as she was Corn Clan. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Dextra has been the subject of a retrospective of her pottery at the Wheelwright called “Painted Perfection“.
