Antonio, Frederica – Four Seasons Jar with Lightning Designs

Frederica Antonio is renown for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This jar is a classic olla shape with a high shoulder and a short neck.  Frederica has painted the Four Seasons in the black-and-white sections of the jar.  Each section is very intricate in design and extends from the neck spiraling to the base.  Separating them are three bands of color, representing lightning.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design create a piece which is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom.

Antonio, Frederica – Four Color Wind Design Jar

Frederica Antonio is known for her intricately painted geometric designs.  This jar is a classic Acoma water jar shape and very thin walled. The jar is coil built, polished and then painted using a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. The design on this jar is complex in terms of the number of layers of clay slip painted onto the piece.  The piece is first fully painted with the checkerboard wind pattern.  She then paints all the color into the small squares to emphasize the various designs.  THEN she goes back with the black and has to repaint over all the designs final time so that the black lines delineate the patterns.  It is a very time-consuming and precision oriented process.   Note the designs created in black, white, red, and tan.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design create a piece which is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom.

Antonio, Frederica – Four Color Infinity Rim Bowl

Frederica Antonio calls this shape of a bowl with the inturned rim, and “Infinity Rim”.  The bowl is coil built and she turns the rim down into the bowl. The result is a striking appearance with the feel of the designs flowing into the piece.  She uses a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. The design on this bowl is a cloud pattern in the black-and-white designs.  There are lightning designs painted in a stair-step manner in two different clay colors.  Finally, there is a rain pattern which swirls the opposite direction in another clay color!  Interestingly, after she has painted on the various colors of clay, she has to paint back over them so the black checkerboard pattern is on top!  It is a very time-consuming and precision oriented process.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design create a piece which is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom.
