Pablita Velarde (1918-2006) was among the first women painters from the Pueblos. Her name in Tewa was “Tse-Tan”, or “Golden Dawn”. She was a student of Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School and she also studied with Tonita Pena (San Ildefonso). She was most famous for her “earth paintings”. On these pieces she used mineral and rock elements that she ground into a powder to make her paints. This style was inspired by the Navajo sandpaintings. Clara Tanner called her the “greatest woman artist in the Southwest”. She was the mother of noted painter Helen Hardin, the grandmother of Margaret Bagshaw and the great-grandmother of Helen Tindel.
