This is a straight shoulder jar by Daniel Begay.  The piece is coil-built, carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The jar has a large carved eagle in flight.  The eagle has 12 carved feathers on each side.  There are also eight carved tail feathers.  Together, including the body, there are 34 carved and polished sections.  Daniel carved the eagle in flight, capturing a moment in time in clay.  The are additional swirling clouds that are matte.  Note the contrast of the matte and polished areas on the jar.  It is elegant in design.  The jar is very deeply carved, and Daniel has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay.  It is a complex and striking piece!  Areas are stone polished to a high shine and create a striking contrast of matte and polished surfaces on this jar. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Daniel Begay ’25”.

Daniel Begay

Daniel T. Begay learned to make pottery from his father, Harrison Begay Jr., and his mother, Marie John. Daniel grew up in Santa Clara Pueblo and is Diné, which inspired him to combine the two cultures and traditions in his pottery. Each piece is coil-built, deeply carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired. Daniel has a Master’s in Business Administration. He is married to Melodie and has three daughters, Violet, Ayani, and Kwynn. He signs his work “Daniel B.” and adds the year the pot was made.
