Autumn Borts-Medlock is renowned for her deeply carved pottery and creative designs.  Parrots often figure into her designs, and this multi-colored jar is a striking example of her current work in clay. The jar has a round body and a short neck.  The jar has two carved parrots that are facing each other, separated by a large flower.  The parrots are very intricately carved into various sections and levels.  The opposite side has a single flower that is surrounded by carved bands of lighting and kiva steps. The parrots are highly polished with red, green, and tan areas. The remainder of the jar has micaceous green, red, and tan areas.  Note the depth of the carving across the entire jar, it is amazing what she was able to accomplish!  The jar t is signed, “Autumn Borts-Medlock, 2026”.

So, why so many parrots on Pueblo and Hopi pottery?   In the pre-contact era, there was a small parrot that was indigenous to the southwest area.  As well, parrot feathers were traded with Central American tribes and were highly valued. Today there are Parrot Clans at Hopi and parrot feathers are used throughout the Pueblo world in various ceremonies and dances.  So, it is not unexpected to see parrots featured on pottery from the various pueblos and Hopi.  They are certainly part of the cultural and historic background of these amazing potters!
